First Ski

Graham is a bit grumpy here because he got snow in his glove. Nice hat though!

Today Graham got to try out his new skis.  It was a beautiful sunny day and a cheek rosy-ing  -19 when we headed out.  You can see in the picture above the sun at its highest point – that’s northern living!  The Gavle map shows lit trails with ski icons by the University.  To our disappointment,  the trails were partly cleared and gravelled.  Oh no!  gravel is no good for skis!

There were no set tracks so I got to make some. This is no fun going out but ok coming back on the same trail.

Today we did a backcountry-style ski by breaking our own trails. Unfortunately it looks like we won’t be skiing there much; we’ll have to find away to get our skis to Hemlingby without walking the whole way there and back (estimated 2 hours!)  The best would be a bus, but it doesn’t seem like a bus goes the whole way, so we may end up biking it.   Biking would be a good way to make up for all the jet fuel we used going back and forth to Canada, but pretty cold coming down the mountain after a ski.  Happily Hemlingby has a sauna and restaurant for us to warm up before we head out.  that will probably be for the daylight hours of next weekend, we’ll let you know how it goes!

On our way home we saw some ducks paddling around the few open partts in the river. I can't imagine swimming around in that water and then going to a snowbank to 'warm up'.

  1. Another awesome photograph – the ducks immediately made it to my desktop. You get great results with a compact point-and-shoot, proving that it is not the equipment that makes the photographer.

(Nice to have nice toys, just not necessary to making great pictures.)

(And yes, I know, P&S cameras have come a long way. Still, you have a tremendous eye for light and composition and I really enjoy the photos.)
