Carneval in Olinda

Olinda is an old town close by Recife that thrives on tourism. Like many cities in Brasil, they claim to have the oldest church in Brasil (they may actually have the oldest synagogue). For some reason, Olinda has their carneval a week before anyone else. I had a day of touring before the conference started. It was great fun to see the drums, dancing, giant marionettes, and parades. I didn’t bring my camera everywhere with me in Brazil due to weather or risk of theft, so I am glad I got these shots during a ‘tourist trip’.
