Scenes in Ybor

Ybor is the historic Latin quarter in Tampa, now very tourist-ified. There are plenty of fancy spots, and on the margins some gay nighclubs, sex shops, grubby bodegas (no cats), and old-school head shops. After a morning paddle we had a late lunch and walked around a bit, our only tourist activity before we flew out the next day.

I think the most charming thing in Ybor was a lane we walked down that had about 25 free-ranging chickens. Clearly a long-term population of escaped layers, since they were pretty spry and about half roosters.

This hen reminded me of a toy-in-egg dispensing vending machine that was in Valley Fair Mall circa 1984.

Something like this, but even more like the living chicken. Anyone remember this?

The chickens were interested and hoping we had breadcrumbs, but we came unprepared. Unlike previous farm visits, these chickees would NOT be held.

When she stood up, a bunch of little chickees were revealed!
