Last year was a good apple year, with all Swedish treefruit being really productive – plums, apples, pears, rosehips, sloe plums, and even the Saskatoons and blueberries. This year it has been a lot quieter on the apple front (our own tree gave maybe a dozen that weren’t eaten by birds, worms, or fungus). However, ithas been an OUTSTANDING mushroom year, with tonnes of porcinis, golden chantarelles, brown chantarelles for the picking. There have also been a shocking number of other varieties, many that I haven’t seen before in exotic fluorescent colours. The warmer than usual September and big rainfalls seem to have made the perfect conditions for mushrooms that grow abundantly, do not get frosted, and importantly grow very fast so they are big before he slugs and bugs get a chance to eat them up. The result has been plentiful mushroom harvests, with lots of pastas, risottos, soups, sandwiches, and still plenty left over to dry for later. Let me know if you want some dried mushrooms!
