Tegnérs started selling semlor the day after Epiphany, which is not even the end of the Christmas season (that is officially St. Knut’s day on January 13th). That was too early for me, but I also don’t usually eat them after lent starts… they were originally a treat just for fat Tuesday, but clearly semla creep has expanded to right after X-mas all the way to Easter day (but never after that, what are you some kind of maniac?)
Tegnér’s did come up with some new flavours this year, which I was happy to try. Most creative was the pistachio semla, with housemade pistachio paste and whole pistachios. It was good! I think my favourite is probably the cremla, which is a classic almond semla on a croissant. Graham and I split a nutella and a pistachio, and I think that’ll do me until semla season 2027.
