Family Yoga

Everyone looked up to pose for a photo, but Mum was obviously too hungry for that.

In the summer of 2018, Erica and I did a 200 hour yoga teacher training at the Saltspring Centre of Yoga. It was 2 x 2 weeks of camping at the centre, where we did morning meditation and asana (physical postures), as well as theory classes and teaching practicums – all while eating yogic meals prepared in the centre’s kitchen. It is a beautiful place and the centre is run as a non-profit by wonderful people, I would highly recommend it if you are considering doing a teacher training. Thanks to Erica and Marie Brown Berg of Saskatoon for encouraging me to go!

In 2019, I went back to Saltspring for a weekend yoga retreat with Mum, David, and Elizabeth. It was a short capsule of everything I remembered: the land, the meditation, the asana, and the food! It was nice to share it with family, and Mum especially seemed really keen on going back.

However, 2020 was not having it; in April all the onsite centre programs were cancelled. Happily they pivoted to develop an online yoga retreat, and the gang got back together to attend! Though no walks through the garden and yogi buffet, we were able to have meals on the deck at Diana House and do some morning pranayama and sadhana together, followed by chai!

The view from Mum’s garden for morning yoga

Also while in Victoria I went to Mum’s house and we did yoga in the garden: sunny and breezy with hummingbirds and butterflies. It was really great to be able to do yoga together in Victoria.
