Happy Mother’s Day!

Flower Bouquet for moms! These roses bloomed in September in Bönan (no action on the rosebushes here yet!)

Happy Mother´s day to all the moms out there, but especially to Annabelle, Bernie, Bridget, Dana and Andrea R.

A special shout out to this year´s debut-moms: Michelle, J-bax, Mona.

Here is a nice thought from Mr. T, circa 1985.

New Niece!

We don't have baby pictures yet, but I imagine Baby and mom are even cuter than this.

We are super excited to Welcome our brand new niece to the family! Little Jasmine was born today in Canada, and everyone is tired but happy. We can’t wait to meet her!

Naturally we have been looking forward to this for a long time. Last night I had a dream that the new niece was born, so I sent an email today asking for an update… which came in the form of an announcement phone call tonight.

Bienvenue, Välkommen, and Welcome!

Happy Birthday Mom

Today is Mom’s birthday.  I won’t say how old because it’s not polite to talk about a woman’s age, but let’s just say that telling people she’s 39 again this year probably isn’t going to work!  Many people think it’s unfair to have a birthday so close to Christmas, but as a wise women once (or twice…) said: “life’s not fair”.  But we always made sure to celebrate Mom’s birthday – no merging with Christmas.  Setting up the Christmas tree was often done on Dec 20th.  However nowadays I think the tree goes up much earlier along with a “whole whack” (Mom’s term) of other tacky and not-so-tacky (just kidding, they’re all tacky) Christmas decorations.  Or as I like to say, “all of that Christmas crap”.

But Mom really does love Christmas, especially the lights and decorations (and probably food and family as well).  I remember as a kid going downtown to the Woodwards building to check out the big Christmas window displays.  Even though Mom couldn’t see so well she really enjoyed it.  When we were in Stockholm last weekend we saw a similar display at the large Swedish department store Nordiska Kompaniet.  Each year they design a new set of Christmas windows which are wildly popular.  We were there early in the morning before the crowds got out of bed so we took these pictures that I thought Mom would enjoy.  You can check out the NK website to learn about this year’s vintersagan (winter story) although it’s all in Swedish.

Happy Birthday Mom! We hope you’re enjoying your vacation from all the “little pukes” at school.

Happy Birthday Mom!

My mom’s birthday is today.  She is a fall baby, she likes the fall leaves, and at some point in the 80’s when she had her colours done, it was determined that she is an ‘autumn’.  This year, my mom’s birthday falls on Canadian Thanksgiving and she will spend the day cooking up a big turkey feast for Graham’s family and mine.  So this is a joint Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Birthday Mom post.  At some point Graham and I determined we could get two Thanksgiving dinners and disappoint no one by strategizing with our moms to have their dinners on different days.  At some point both sets of families got in on the action so that everyone got two dinners.  Now that we are away, our families have determined that it is a tradition no one wants to upset.  So they still get two delicious dinners and we will be making our own out of Swedish ingredients.  Lingon berries are a great stand-in for cranberries, and we have already cooked up our pumpkin in preparation for pie, cookies, soup and possibly muffins.

They don't really have turkeys in Sweden, so we are looking for alternatives.

My mom told me once when I was little that children whose mothers went to university were more likely to go to university themselves.  I have got a lot of mileage out of that correlation!  I hope you have an awesome Birthday/Thanksgiving Mom, and be sure to delegate some of the carrot peeling to the big guy.  (Graham is sorry he will miss the potato mashing.)
